In actual psychology, anxiety disorders involve excessive, chronic worry thatโ€™s difficult to control and interferes with daily life. It can ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐˜†๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† (racing heart, dizziness, nausea), ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† (intrusive thoughts, rumination), and ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† (overwhelm, dread). The anxiety may be generalised or situation-specific (e.g., phobias, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder).

This matters because when we casually use โ€œanxietyโ€ to describe fleeting stress, we:

ย ย โ€ข Risk normalising suffering that might benefit from treatment.

ย ย โ€ข Discourage people from seeking help by making them think what theyโ€™re experiencing is โ€œjust life.โ€


Itโ€™s okay to feel anxious sometimes. Itโ€™s also okay to ask: ๐˜๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด? When in doubt, seek support. Anxiety is highly treatable when recognized and addressed.
